FAQ: Rescue Racing

What is Rescue Racing?

A route at the International Rescue HQ for SERVE ON where team attempt to proceed around laps of a 1.5 mile course of challenges based obstacles and stances based on real life missions and training activities for the team. These challenges are ground based and do not require previous technical knowledge or skills.

DARKSWAN is running the event on the 21st of Sept to raise funds for SERVE ON and also uses bespoke rescue racing challenges to develop people and teams who can benefit from unique ways to improve themselves

Who is Rescue racing for?

The simple answer is anyone, there are two options a rugged obstacle based course and a non obstacle course where you can cover laps and observe the action.

The event is for those wanting to push  themselves or wanting to be involved a more leisurely level of physicality.

For charity events the aim is to fund raise and to meet like minded people whilst having a great time.

The obstacles course is currently for over 18s however we are looking to lower the age to 16. The non obstacle course is any ages provided under 16s are accompanied by a responsible adult

What makes Rescue Racing unique?

This is a model where you can challenge as much or as little as works for you and your team, it gives insights into the world of international rescue and disaster response AND you can learn to improve performance as you go due to the challenge of completing laps where you can improve on your teams approach to various obstacles.

The staff and organisers are all practitioners in a variety of rescue and service roles and want to see racers thrive from the experience and leave better for it.

What obstacles are on the course?

One of the greatest challenges in disaster response in the sense of uncertainty, so we will not give too much away however……

You can expect to move around laps of an off road course on foot where you will: carry, crawl, balance, support those in need, communicate in the dark, make short plans to solve problems, change plans based on what you learn and some rescue specific quick challenges.

NB Depending on the weather, there are no obstacles that directly require getting wet….

Can spectators come and cheer us on?

Yes we would love for the event to have the positive energy that supporters bring however as it is on private ground we need to account for visitors on and off site.

We have a route for runners, walker or supporters at a low rate so please choose that option for supporting.

Supporters under 16 go free as long as accompanied by a paid adult and registered on the grounds.

Under 16s must be accompanied at all time

There is a cost to the Charity for using the grounds and so there will be over flow car parking and Marshalls. If the car park fills up we can run a shuttle service for an area further away for a small fee to the land owners

We will have concessions (food and drink) all profits to the charity.

There will be rescue displays to learn about rescue and the equipment used.

How do individuals or small teams participate?

First you must register and sign up for either the obstacles course or the non obstacles

Obstacle teams consist of 4-7 members (it might be possible to have larger units on the day however we don’t want to crowd the obstacles)

If it is just you or up to three of you then we will try to pair an extra 1-3 persons up with you and make a team of upto 7

(we will open a channel to seek extras in the build up to the event).

Individuals or accompanied under 16s can book to complete laps without obstacles and either try to complete marathon distances or fun laps watching the action and cheering teams on.

What is the ideal team size

The Minimum team size on the course is 4 however you can run with 7 (or more under the discretion of the organizers).

An ideal might be over 4 as some obstacles might not need all your team and some will benefit from sharing the load or “simultaneous activity”.

We want to avoid teams that are so big they can’t move through.

NB Teams will have to be together in the race and not spread out.

How many circuits of the obstacle course do we complete?

Teams will get three hours of time on the course following a designated start time to avoid a mad scramble!

(Every 5-10 mins Between 1000 and 1300 depending on numbers)

At the end of each lap teams will be ticked off so their laps are counted and timed

Teams can make as many laps as you can (If the team is complete)

Teams are allowed to complete your last lap if on the course at three hours

Clearly cheating, disadvantaging others, not completing obstacles, putting self or other in danger or cutting corners will disqualify teams from the competitive aspects

Are we competing against other teams or the clock?

With designated start times you are essentially completing against the clock HOWEVER we will track number of laps and lap times with prizes for:

  • The most “clean” laps
  • The fastest laps
  • The most laps  the day round the non obstacle (you have 1000 – 1600 and can finish your last lapif you are on the course at 1600.
  • There will also be awards for special endeavours throughout the day
Is there a running order to the day?

We will have open the race registration point at 0830. There will be an all in briefing at 0930 and again at 1100 and  (to allow for later start times).

Those on the course will be allowed to finish their last lap when their time is complete

3 hours for obstacles course and all day for non obstacles racers

Those on the course at 1600 will have 1 hour to complete their last lap before the course is closed and must be cleared by 1700.

Will teams be given a time slot?

Yes you will have a start time window to be registered and ready by.

Teams must be present for an “all in“ brief at 0900 or 1100 if you are starting after 1130

You can give preferences for start times on application.

What happens when all the racing is complete?

The Event closes at 1730. This will be when we announce winners and award prizes

When you are complete you will be able to collect your talismanic completion item (this is not a classic medal but more of an every day item to keep with you)

You are welcome to leave at any time however you must book off site

There is Camping and an after party with limited spaces as the SERVE ON staff and DARKSWAN Fire and feast Rescue Racing creators will be staying for food and to help pack up on Sunday

If you wish to attend please contact info@darkdswan.uk

We will have identifiable medics across the course and a safety team connected by radio throughout the event
